How to pick an engagement ring that actually lasts.

A practical, no-fluff guide to picking an engagement ring that you (and the person wearing it) will love in twenty years. We cover stone clarity, setting strength, sizing, plating, and the one thing nobody warns you about. Bookmark it. Share it with the friend who needs it.

The first time we sold an engagement ring at Drips, the customer called the next day in a panic. "Can I size up if her finger swells in summer?" Yes. "What if I need to upgrade the stone in five years?" You can. "What if she hates it?" Thirty days, no questions, no restocking fee — even on engagement pieces. We rebuilt the FAQ that night.

Engagement rings are the most loaded purchase in fine jewellery. They are expensive, they are public, they are emotional, and most people only buy one in their life. So they get it wrong, often, in three ways:

1. They overspend on the stone, underspend on the setting.

The stone is what catches light. The setting is what holds the stone in place for the next forty years. We have repaired more loose-stone settings than we can count — almost always from rings bought from sellers who put the budget into carat weight and bought the cheapest setting that would technically clamp around the stone.

The fix: spend at least 30% of your ring budget on the metal and the setting itself. A 1.5 ct stone in a solid hand-finished pavé setting will outlast a 2.5 ct stone in a thin prong any year of the week.

2. They guess the size.

The single most common reason a ring needs to come back to us. Fingers swell in summer, shrink in winter, and dominant hands sit a half-size up from non-dominant. The most reliable way to size: get the person's existing rings measured by a jeweller (we do this free, just bring or post the ring). Second most reliable: use our printable sizing guide and measure twice on a normal-temperature day.

If you can't get the size in advance — buy at the higher end of your guess. Our resize policy is free for the first resize, $40 thereafter, and we ship a sizing kit with every engagement order.

The right size is the size their finger is in winter.

3. They don't ask about the warranty.

Almost every "fine jewellery" seller online offers something they call a warranty. Almost none of them honour it the way you assume they will. Read the small print before you buy. The questions to ask:

  • Does the warranty cover stone loss? (Most don't.)
  • Does it cover re-polishing? (Most don't.)
  • Is it transferable to a future owner? (Almost none are.)
  • Is there a time limit? (Real "lifetime" should mean lifetime.)
  • What happens if the seller goes out of business? (For most, you have nothing.)

Our policy: lifetime craftsmanship guarantee covers stone re-setting, structural defects, and re-polishing forever. Transferable. No time limit. We hold a third-party insurance bond that pays out if we close. We are not the only ones who do this — but most don't, so ask.

The one thing nobody warns you about.

You will second-guess every choice. Even when the ring arrives, even when they say yes, even three years in. This is normal. The piece you buy is not a permanent decision in the way you think it is. We can re-size it, re-polish it, replace stones, swap settings, and — yes — exchange it after the wedding for a different design at credit. The best engagement ring is the one you can adjust into the right shape over time.

If we can help, we are on the support page. We respond within 4 hours during business days.
